BECOMING A MEMBER

Why Become a Member of McFarland Lutheran Church? Our purpose is to invite you to grow deeper into Jesus and the community that bears his name. We invite you to go beyond “attending” to making a commitment to Jesus Christ and Christ’s Church here in this place. Why?

Biblical Reason

Christ is committed to the Church

“…Christ loved the church, and he gave his life for it.” Ephesians 5:25

Cultural Reason

It is an antidote to our society

We live in an age where very few want to commit to anything… a job… a marriage… etc. Membership swims against American “consumer religion”. Committing to membership is an unselfish decision that builds character.

Practical Reason

It defines who can be counted on in the body of Christ

Every team has a roster. Membership identifies our family. Here at McFarland Lutheran Church membership defines who has made a commitment and who can be counted on.

Personal Reason

Commitment to membership produces spiritual growth

The New Testament emphasizes the need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual growth.

NEW MEMBER CLASSES

We welcome all to explore the potential of becoming a part of the Body of Christ at McFarland Lutheran Church. Classes are offered three times during the year, in spring, fall and near the beginning of the year. once a year. Two Classes options are offered:  two (1 hour) classes on consecutive Sunday mornings (during the 10:30 a.m. worship service when there is a nursery available for families with young children), or one (2 hour class) on a weeknight. Children age three and above may participate in Sunday school at that time.

In New Member classes, participants get to know the staff and programs of McFarland Lutheran Church, explore the basics of Lutheran faith and discern their gifts and passion for ministry within the congregation. Each family unit is given a sponsor from within the congregation. Sponsors may meet with their family/individual for coffee or dessert, send cards and greetings, answer any questions about the congregation that their family may have. In short, sponsors guide their new member families through the process of “becoming connected into MLC”.

Upon completion of the classes, the new families are welcomed into the congregation at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. They are presented to the congregation by with their sponsors at that time and their photos and profiles are displayed in the Great Hall.

People who wish to become part of the congregation may also transfer their membership from another ELCA congregation by calling that congregation and requesting that a letter of transfer be sent to McFarland Lutheran Church.

If you wish to become a member of MLC, please contact the church office at 838-3184 or e-mail us at office@mcfarlandlutheran.org so we may notify you of the exact dates and times that classes begin. Until you are officially received into membership, you are encouraged to participate in worship and adult education classes, send your children to Sunday School and/or Confirmation classes, participate in all events and programs and do all the things you would normally do in order to enter into the life of the congregation.

Transferring in by letter does constitute official membership status, but taking the classes is preferred as it provides the best way of becoming oriented to our congregation and is an excellent way to get to know others who are entering the journey here as well.
