Care of Creation Ministry Team

Here at McFarland Lutheran Church the Care of Creation Ministry Team seeks to increase our awareness of God’s love for all creation and to recognize our call to participate in the care of God’s creation. Ministries include starting a congregational garden, beginning a prairie restoration area on Church grounds, holding an Earth Day event each spring, sharing information about composting and providing educational information about ways to conserve energy at home and in our church building.

Our Mission

The Care of Creation team of McFarland Lutheran Church seeks to increase the awareness of God’s love for all creation and to recognize our call to participate in the care of God’s creation.

Our Vision

To raise awareness of God’s love for us and for all creation, to encourage caring for creation through recycling and reusing, and to invite people into God’s continuing process of creating and renewing. We hope to do this through some of the following activities.

  • Celebrating Earth Day each year with a special worship service and intergenerational family event. Activities may include making bird houses, sewing cloth grocery bags, seeing a play, learning about recycling, and exploring some of the following:
  • Offering a congregational garden to give people the opportunity to learn gardening skills and reduce the amount of lawn mowed on church grounds.
  • Including school age kids of CLM in the gardening experience so they can grow produce for CLM summer sampling and give extras to the Food Pantry or a MLC Garden Market on Sundays.
  • Providing information about composting and rain barrels, to encourage home composting to reduce the amount of trash that goes into the landfills and to encourage rain barrels to reduce the amount of water used for gardening.
  • Supporting the implementation of a rain garden (accomplished by Boy Scout Troop 53) that will hold water run-off and further reduce the amount of lawn mowed on church grounds.
  • Starting, expanding and nurturing a prairie restoration project to further reduce the amount of lawn mowed at MLC and to educate about the importance of prairies as an eco-system that illustrates God’s marvelous plan for creation
  • Offering educational experiences about prairies including trips for families to the arboretum, Advent Lutheran and local private and public lands. And, to hold seed-gathering trips for CLM school-agers, children of the congregation, youth and adults as preparation for our prairie restoration plot. We also hope to raise awareness about the importance of the prairie eco-system and its preservation in and around our community.

"On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing 12 crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations." Revelation 22:2b
